Eva Selhub
Dr. Eva Selhub knows one unequivocal truth about human health: Just because a disease enters the body does not mean its symptoms will manifest.

In the course of her clinical practice and research career at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Tufts Medical School, and The Benson Henry Institute for Mind/Body Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Dr. Selhub has sought out the differences between a body that can fight a pathogen and one that cannot, between one prone to illness and one prone to health. Dr. Selhub found that the key factor in stopping and reversing disease, maintaining health, and improving rather than deteriorating with age is the giving and receiving of love and affection. Love in all its forms and the affection we exchange with people and pets are more than emotions or feel-good gestures according to Dr. Selhub. Love, and the affection that flows from it, regulates the body’s stress system – the circuit of peptides, hormones, and pathways between the mind and body that keeps us wound up tight or calm and centered. The stress system manages all of the body’s other systems such as the immune, nerve, muscular- skeletal, endocrine, circulatory, hormonal, metabolic and cardio-vascular. Love and affection balances the stress system which, in turn, acts in concert with other bodily systems to maintain health.

In her lectures and workshops, Dr. Selhub explains the hard science behind the physical benefits of deliberately shifting into a place of love and proactively creating the bonds we need to do so– with others, with ourselves, with the divine. She documents how the demonstration of that love in the form of affection, self-nurturance and altruistic works improves health on every level. She then instructs participants in a set of simple practices that allows them to find – in mere moments – an inner stillness, enabling the neurobiology of love to bring the body and mind into a state of flow and resilience, the hallmarks of health.

Dr. Selhub bases her approach on what she terms the “Love ResponseTM” - the chain of bio-chemical processes that occur in the body when a person operates from love – and its complement, the “Stress Response” – the chain of bio-chemical processes that occur when a person operates from fear. The two are meant to co-exist in a fine balancing act. When they do, the stress system remains regulated, resulting in health and wellbeing. However, when the Stress Response dominates too often and for too long, the stress system runs amok, resulting is a physical make up conducive to illness and disease. During the course of her clinical career, Dr. Selhub has successfully helped many patients with a wide variety of clinical conditions such as depression, anxiety, infertility, symptoms of menopause, chronic pain and fatigue, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and obesity or weight management. Using her proprietary methods, Dr. Selhub treated her patients’ physical problems by also enabling them to work through the stress related to their relationships, careers, family, or life purpose. As a result, Dr. Selhub shares her knowledge and expertise through lectures and presentations that are geared to a variety of audiences, including health care providers, corporate facilities, and the general public. All of the lectures are didactic and experiential.

Topics include: • Stress Physiology: The Stress Response Explains the physiology of stress and the effects it has on health and disease. Time: 1hour 30 minutes • The physiology of Love: The Love Response Explains the physiology of love as the antidote to the physiology of stress and the health benefits. Time: 1 hour 30 minutes • Mind/body principles as applied to Health Explains the variety of mind/body interventions and the science behind them. The focus can be weight loss, chronic pain, insomnia, etc. Time: 1 hour + • The Relaxation Response Addressing what the relaxation response is and the variety of ways to elicit the response. Time: 45 minutes • Managing Stress so that it does not manage you Addressing ways to develop awareness to the types of stress that are creating problems in the body and mind, the workplace, or in relationships. Time: 2 hours Objectives of Dr. Selhub’s workshops and lectures include the following: • Understanding stress physiology, the stress response and the relationship to health and disease. • Understanding the physiology of love, the Love ResponseTM, as an antidote to stress and stress physiology. • Skill building in mind/body interventions such as elicitation of the relaxation response. • Skill building in the Active Belief SystemTM method, Dr. Selhub’s proprietary method which teaches you to actively change beliefs and your physiology to into the Love ResponseTM.

In addition to lectures and presentations, Dr. Selhub also offers one or two day “Living in the Love ResponseTM” workshops. Through a combination of meditation, healing and practical exercises, participants learn to build the skills they need to live their life in the Love Response instead of the stress response. Much of the focus is learning how to center in the heart to find peace and stillness in order to maintain awareness and clarity. Such clarity then enables individuals to better handle stress, communicate, and achieve their dreams. Dr. Selhub’s book, The Love Rx, is due to be published by Ballantine Books, division of Random House Publishing in January 2009. She has produced two audio CD’s, Finding Stillness and Relax into Love, available on Amazon.com and her website, www.theloveresponse.com. Two new CD’s, The Love Response I and The Love Response II, produced by The Relaxation Company and distributed by Simon and Schuster, will be released in June and October of 2008 respectively
